Highly accessible, spie.com offers a number of features to help users navigate the site with ease. The following is a list of all accessibility features available on spie.com.

The SPIE logo

Click on the SPIE logo in the top banner on all pages of the website to return to the spie.com homepage.

Menus

Main menu

The main menu located in the left column provides access to the main sections and pages of spie.com. This expandable menu can be controlled with a mouse, keyboard or touchscreen.
The “Media”, “Finance” and “Careers” sections can be accessed in the top banner on every page on the website.

Secondary menu

When navigating a main section of spie.com, sub-headings appear in the menu, with an indentation symbolising the structure of the current section.

Footer menu

At the bottom of the page, the expandable footer menu provides access to all sections of the site as well as additional pages like the “Contact” section, other SPIE websites, social network pages, the Terms of Use, the site map, etc.

Breadcrumbs

On all pages of the website with the exception of the homepage, breadcrumbs are shown above the main content of the page. These breadcrumbs display the current page’s location within spie.com. It shows the path between the homepage and the current page, while also providing quick access links to each page on this path.

Site map

On all pages of the website, the site map can be accessed by using the link located in the footer menu at the bottom of the page. The site map provides a global view of the organisation of spie.com and enables direct access to any page or section.

Search engine

On all pages, a search field is available in the top banner of the website. When you perform a search, the spie.com search engine lists all pages that best correspond to your search terms.
Features available through your browser.
In addition to the features provided by the spie.com website, the site was also designed to work optimally with all functionalities provided by your web browser.

Text size

On all pages of the spie.com website, you can increase the text size for easier reading. On PCs, use the hot key “Ctrl” + "+" (the plus key) to increase text size and “Ctrl” + "-" (the minus key) to decrease text size. Use these hot keys more than once to continue increasing or decreasing text size. In addition, you can use “Ctrl” + “0” (the zero key) to return to the default text size. Mac users can simply replace the “Ctrl” key with the “Cmd” key to use these same hot keys.

Keyboard navigation

spie.com was designed to enable keyboard navigation on every page. In most cases, hitting the “Tab” key will move your cursor between clickable items on the page from top to bottom and left to right. You can also hit “Shift” +” Tab” to move in the opposite direction.

Printing

Keyboard users can print any page of the website by accessing that page and typing “Ctrl” +”P” on PCs or “Cmd” + “P” on Macs.

Bookmarks

Keyboard users can also bookmark any page by accessing that page and typing “Ctrl” + “D” on PCs or “Cmd” + “D” on Macs.

PDF files

Several PDF files are available for download from spie.com.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view these files. This programme can be downloaded for free at the following address: http://get.adobe.com/fr/reader/.

Videos

Several videos are available on spie.com. Special efforts were made to ensure that as many web users as possible can view these videos.

Text transcriptions

Detailed transcriptions are provided for each video.
These are available to provide access to video content when users cannot view these videos.
Transcriptions can be accessed by clicking the link located directly below each video.

Subtitles

Wherever necessary, videos contain synchronised subtitles. Subtitles can be activated and deactivated by clicking a button on the video player.
Subtitles help those users who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as users without sound playback (no speakers, noisy environment, etc.) to access the audio content of each video. Subtitles are also useful for non-native French speakers, who often prefer audio and textual elements to increase their comprehension.

From design to development to updates, the owner of spie.com ensures the site’s compliance with the best practices for accessibility established by AcceDe Web.
With the exception of the following areas, spie.com complies with all AcceDe Web best practices for accessibility:

  • Keyboard controls are not yet enabled to scroll through a video
  • Not all video buttons are currently compatible with screen readers
  • Some of the PDF files available for download are not fully accessible
